Rancher Sues Oil Company to Protect Property Rights

For over 100 years, Susan Robinson’s family has raised cattle and sheep on lands surrounding her family homestead between Rifle and Meeker in Western Colorado. Shortly after Mrs. Robinson’s husband passed away unexpectedly in 2016, a subsidiary of ConocoPhillips came knocking on her door with a request for her to sign a lease for the land where her family has maintained roads, fences, gates, windmills, and water structures since the Great Depression.  Instead of signing the lease, she contacted David McConaughy, shareholder in charge of the Garfield & Hecht, P.C. Glenwood Springs office.  When ConocoPhillips began fencing off Mrs. Robinson from her land and driving away her cattle, Mr. McConaughy assisted by Jason Buckley of Garfield & Hecht, P.C., an associate attorney in the firm’s Avon office, filed a lawsuit to protect her rights and her family’s ranching heritage. Garfield & Hecht, P.C. attorneys frequently handle real property disputes throughout Colorado, including matters involving adverse possession, injunctive relief, and access issues. For further information about this or other property law issues, please contact David McConaughy () or Jason Buckley ().
