Garfield & Hecht Attorney Attends ABA Bar Leadership Institute Conference in Chicago
The American Bar Association held its annual Bar Leadership Institute conference in Chicago, Illinois, March 14 – 16, 2018. This year marked the 40th Anniversary of the conference. BLI’s goal is to provide premier leadership training to bar leaders such as best practices in governance, effective communication skills, and member engagement and retention tools. The conference was attended by bar association board members, officers, and executive directors from across the country. Associations represented at the conference ranged in size from local bars with less than 1,400 members to state bars with more than 16,000 members.
Garfield & Hecht attorney Haley Carmer was among the BLI attendees. Ms. Carmer represented the 9th Judicial District Bar Association at the conference. The 9JDBA was one of the smallest associations at the conference with just over 150 members. While many of the learning sessions were geared toward larger associations, Ms. Carmer learned a lot about how bar associations, including the 9JDBA, will need to evolve going forward to provide meaningful services and benefits to the changing landscape of lawyers. She also received some valuable communication tips by attending a workshop presented by two writers from Chicago’s famed Second City. Watching a room full of attorneys toss imaginary balls around an auditorium was certainly a memorable experience.
